Sodium metabisulfite is mainly used as a flotation agent in mining. The role of sodium metabisulfite in mining is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1. Inhibition effect

Sodium metabisulfite has an inhibitory effect on some minerals, which can reduce its floatability and thus reduce its interference with useful minerals. For example, in copper ore flotation, sodium metabisulfite can inhibit the flotation of sulfide minerals such as pyrite, thereby better distinguishing it from copper minerals.

2. Activation

Sodium metabisulfite has an activation effect on some difficult to flotation minerals, which can improve their floatability. For example, in the flotation of copper oxide, sodium metabisulfite can react with copper oxide minerals to generate soluble copper sulfate, thereby enhancing the floatability of copper minerals.

3. Adjust the pH value

Sodium metabisulfite can be used as a pH regulator to improve the flotation performance of minerals by adjusting the pH value of the slurry. For example, in some acidic mineral slurries, adding sodium metabisulfite can neutralize acidity and improve the floatability of minerals.
